Art as a practice, as I understand it, is a way to organize different aspects of my life into one congruent appreciable life-experience or, differently put: the way life elaborates its own coherence through the framework or view it is presented with.
The process involved mostly qualifies as one of integration, thereby striving to outgrow any identifiable form of indoctrination or formal segregation following a set canon of ‘aesthetic’ preference or discrimination.
From where I stand, aesthetics (or culture) are not concerned with acquired tastes or preferences reinforcing status quo, but, on the contrary, demand an active, interpersonal recognition of oneself as the other/the other as oneself, in an intimate one on one encounter, involving no third party (group) ‘authority’.
So it is a construct, in demand of constant reinvention, yes. Does that make it a lie? Not necessarily, if it is done in agreement. Does that make it a (shared) illusion? Not necessarily. To me, like any fiction, it is a reality, exceeding the contingencies of its particular story.
